Tomorrow is New Year's Eve. This year has been full of lots of ups and downs. But it was good, even the downs b/c I've been trying to learn from them and to do better next time. I'm going to end 2011 with a bang. How you ask? Well, I am going to do 3 photoshoots tomorrow. Yes you heard me right 3. I've never done that many in one day and I'm sure I'm going to be exhausted by 5 tomorrow but it'll be worth it. All of these shoots means that new photos will be available for your viewing pleasure soon!
Happy New Year to all of you!
This blog is about my adventures in being a portrait photographer out here in sunny Los Angeles. The adventures are real, although the names at times, may be false.

Ophelia
My friend messaged me and was like , Ashley, I wanna shoot. So the next weekend, in the mist of cloudy coldness, we did a little photoshoot. It's amazing how much better a person gets the 2nd time around, even if that 2nd time is 1 1/2 later. Here are a few of the shots from that cold day.
It's holiday time and to get into the cheer I thought I'd do a little giveaway. So anyone who comments on my fb page during the next two days will automatically be entered into the drawing. This is my way of spreading a little holiday cheer. =)

Little update
Life has been crazy. I haven't had time to catch up with my editing at all. It's the holiday season which means on top of all the normal work I do, I have been trying to secure gifts for my clients at work. I have totally thrown myself into that project which has been both a blessing and a curse. But much more of a blessing. I have been really lucky and have met some truely amazing people. I have also been Holiday partying it up all weekend. Haha. I will put updates soon I promise. Until then, I hope you all are having a very wondeful holiday season. Eat a cupcake or two for me. =)

Chrystal
The little one hiding in her mommy's tummy in these photos was born on Wednesday. I figure it's about time I edited and posted these eh? The idea was to do a pregnancy shoot that was part fashion/editorial. I did some normal ones also. Enjoy.

a friendly saturday
Saturday was a day full of cold breezes and clouds sneaking into the horizon, getting ready for the Sunday that would full of rain. I wouldn't say it was the perfect day for a photoshoot, but some days are just like that. Just like in regular life though, the show must go on. This was a pretty simple shoot. My friend had just wanted some updated photos of herself, so we met up at my place. She put on her make up, did her hair, and we went through her clothes. We drove over to a local park and shot away. It was really pretty, all orange leaves and fall themed. We had good conversation, which I really needed. We ended the day at PF Chang's.
I just love being able to show people these really amazing places where you can go on a romantic stroll or just hang out. It's nice that you can drive into a neighbor hood, park on the street, and then walk down a little trail to find this really pretty grove of trees. I feel that california is full of little secrets like that. It makes you want to come back for more!

Eight is great
Familiar faces. Cloudy skies. Today was our 8th shoot. Wow right? It's been practically 2 1/2 years since we've met. Things have changed. But we still have photoshoots. The best thing about Scipio is that he's practically my biggest fan. And today was a day I needed to hear good. So thanks for that. I'll post photos soon enough.

Chrystal is what?!
Chrystal is pregnant. My dear friend and person I have shoot over and over for the last 3 years. With her I did my first engagement shoot, first wedding, and now first maternity shoot. That's a lot of firsts. I thought long and hard about what I wanted out of the shoot. I wanted it to be fashion. I wanted weird. I wanted a shoot where the belly was just an accesory, not the main focus. But at the end, I did these shots, just for chrystal so that she could have some typical ones thrown in. Here they are:
She's so tiny. hello? Is there a belly there?

She's smelling daisies
"I want to hold her, I want to kiss her." Who would have thought I would actually like some song I heard off some mix that is filled with other awful music?
Friday:
I get these picutures in my head. Of what I want. Of what I would like to see my camera capture. There are times I am right on. And other times I am disappointed. I want to yell at my camera and ask for it to cooperate with what I see. Friday was not one of those times. The whole shoot was inspired by pink eye make sure. It looked fantabulous. There were times when I wished that my camera would have captured it better. But the whole overall look was just great. The girl inadvertantly kind of looked like a zombie, but it totally worked. I mean I do have a thing for zombies. Our little shoot took place in Griffith park, which was filled with mommies, nannies, and people who wore their designer clothes to have coffee and pie at the cafe. The leaves on the trees are starting to think about changing colors so it was really nice scenery. Thanks to Sasha and Teresa for a fabulous shoot!
Today:
Downtown LA. So many shoots in dt lately. This is for once wasn't in the arts district or little tokyo. You mean there are other parts to downtown? Who knew? This was the complete other side. Lots of interesting people. And by interesting, I mean families doing laundry, people hanging out, and men who smell of alcohol stalking me and the model. Haha. You gotta love it. It's just one of those places where you folks you wouldn't see anywhere else. The model and I walked up and down diff streets, doing life style/editorial stuff. Just using our surroundings like bus bences, newspaper stands, and chairs on the side of the road. I think we got some great shots and it gave me a chance to do some of that addicting black and white photography that I love so much.
I can smell my food cooking. So I think it's a sign that it's time to end this little post. I have more shoots in the works. So until next time. =0) "I'm gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane."

Bk/Chelsea
For those of you who don't know, I did a shoot last weekend with the lead singer of Beverly Kills, Robyn Troup. The shoot took place in the Art's District. I've shot there alot in the past. There is just so much wall art around there. The crappy thing, was the bike police who told us we needed a permit. Argh. But hey, he told us we had 30 mins to shoot, 30 mins turned into over an hour, but hey, who was counting? Haha. This is a little behind the scenes shot. I like it b/c they just looked so cool walking down the street.
So this is Gbemi. We did a super quick shoot while I was in Houston. It was over 100 degrees, humid, and I thought i would die of heat exhaustion. Needless to say, I wasn't at my best. But we still got a few good shots, and that's all I ever ask for. I apparently liked the photos where she was looking over her shoulder.

The art district
By the way, when did cops on bicycles have the authority to tell you not to shoot? The minute you got on the bike is the minute I lost respect.

What would Stevie do? - The photos
What would Stevie do? Stevie is a music icon and Ms. Vanessa thinks he's the bomb. On our trek to figuring out if Stevie would be a secret agent, climb fences, or just sit on his patio singing a tune, we emulated the question no one had an answer to, what would Stevie do.
Vanessa loves to sing, and do her little dances. Vanessa is the keyboardist and back up singer to the band Maniac. You should check them out, http://www.maniacmania.com/. She is also presently writing her own solo stuff and hopefully it'll be released in the next few months.

Back to day 1
On my drive to work this morning, while watching the mountains pass me by, I was thinking about some of my first photo shoots. My very first shoot ever was with my friend, Liz. I had finally decided that I was going to stop saying I want to take photos and actually do it. So I spent more money than I had and bought me my first semi-professional camera. I gathered all of my guts, b/c back then, I wasn't used to just asking random people to shoot, and I asked her to shoot. And to my surprise, she said yes. A few days later, we met at this park by her house for the shoot. I barely even knew how to use the camera back then. I tried to pose her and she tried to pose herself, and we clicked away. Now today, 3 years and 10 months later, if we met at that same park, we would get a completely different outcome. In some ways, it's nice, to be past that beginning phase. I've done tons of shoots. I've been lucky and have been able to gain a lot of experience. Everyday I am still learning. I still make mistakes. The hardest part is moving past those mistakes and the thoughts in my head, to learn and move forward. I just wanted to thank all of you guys out there who have shot with me and given me the chance to do one of the things I love best, which is photography. So thank you! Here's to many more years of capturing moments with my camera. I will get into editing mode this weekend and edit lots of photos. So be on the lookout for some new work being posted.

Film Noir
I've learned that it's hard to put together a shoot when you are 1300 miles away. Between texts, emials, and phoone calls, it got put together. There were times I wasn't sure. Esp when 2 hours before the shoot, the mua called in sick. I was like ahhhhh. But it worked out. The replacement MUA did a fabulous job. The model looked stunning. In the midst of my dad's very messy house, we managed to do a 100% natural light shoot. Using windows and doors as light sources. Thanks to my low light lens. I think we got some fabulous photos. Watching really bad 80's movies (ie. jaw: revenge and 3 o'clock high), we put together a film noir shoot. I've never done that before and it turned out to be fun. Just the whole look came together fabulous. I can't wait to see the finished results, you know, once I actually go through the photos and start to edit them. So until then, stay tuned. =)
As always I'm putting together more shoots. Follow on Facebook for more up to date updates.

Cullinan vs cullen park
Imagine 100 degree heat filled with humidity. Imagine walking out of your car to start sweating on a few minutes later. Imagine looking out over swamp land to not see a swamp. Just dry and cracked dirt and bugs. That was the scene of my photo shoot two days ago. Needless to say, we didn't shoot for very long. I was almost as wet from sweat that I was when I was being rained upon in New York. I want to thank the model for being a good sport and not complaining. Photos coming in the next few weeks. I promise.

Dom
Posting a few photos from a last minute shoot I did on Sunday. Styling and directing was done by Joshua Bryon. Model: Dominic. MUA: Kylie. Photos taken in the beautiful downtown. Josh and I sneaked up this hotel to the top floor to see if we could find roof access. It was so pretty up there. The view. The oldness. All of it. We couldn't get up on top though. So here are the photos.

The funny faces of Vanessa aka What would Stevie do.
Imagine standing outside on a side walk, staring at three doors, trying to figure out which one is the right one. When I see the famous photo. Then I'm like duh. So I walk in. There's the model. A mixture of nervousness and excitement. She says, I want to do a shoot inspired by Stevie Wonder. Which in her world means wearing sparkly clothes and sunglasses. We walked around town with one motto, what would stevie do, and then mostly did the opposite. There are only so many poses a blind man who plays the piano can do. Sometimes she was a secret agent, other times she was a california girl. All in all, she did well for her first photo shoot.
Little story to tell: So there I was taking photos of Vanessa in a partially empty parking lot with these really cool graffiti walls in Hipster ville. Vanessa was wearing her brother's lime green jacket and his girl friend's sparkly skirt. This dude comes up to us with a video camera. He's like hey, would it be cool if I filmed you. We were like okay. Later on, I asked him what it was for. He said he was doing a horror movie about Hispters who get murdered for being Hipsters. Haha. So maybe we'll be in a little short film. Either way, it's a pretty cool story to tell.

A sunny sunday
Some days start off cloudy, and before you know it, you are awashed in the sun. You sit on a bench, eating a lemon cupcake from Crumbs, one block from the busy Hollywood blvd, waiting for the model and Mua to arrive. This shoot was inspired from a shoot I did a few months ago on a lovely model named Libby. The mua loved the shoot and wanted to do something similiar. I said cool. This was a marilyn monroe inspired shoot. But don't let that fool you. Each shoot takes up a mind of it's own. So in the mist of tons of police officiers on bikes and in cars, us 3 ladies walked around the heart of hollywood taking photos and avoiding the smells of urine. Here's a little sneak peak. More will be coming I promise. =)

Elias!
Me: Hey, come look at this.
E: Oh yeah poison oak.
Me: Huh? No..... Elias, the car.
As I tell my clients over and over, two people can be looking at the same thing and see something totally different. I was all excited b/c I found this old car we could use as a prop. Elias was focused on the poison oak. I guess that shows where our minds were. Needless to say, we both agreed that we wanted fabulous pictures. This was our first venture into the wilderness. But prolly not our last. This makes 7 shoots! Whoohoo! so here are some of the finished products. And yeah, I know the car didn't make it in any of the photos. But trust me, it was cool.

Vinyl Art
If there are three things I love, it's music, photography, and art. So here's a little mix of all of that put together. This was spurred by the art I saw at Venice beach yesterday. I have more on my facebook and more in progress. It's a great way to express my love of my favorite bands, by showcasing them as art.

Adventures of a city day
Debs park. A nice little hideaway in the mist of the big bad city. Not much traffic. Really nice scenery. A lovely view of downtown LA and highland park. Definitly a nice place to go and check out. Just maybe not in hella hot heat when the sun is blaring down on your face, you are sweating out all the water in your body, and you are running on maybe 6 hours of sleep. Seriously though, it was the first time Elias and I have shot in the wilderness. We always do city scapes, so this was something different for us. No fences to jump or alleys to hide in. Just poison oak, an abandoned car, and the city view for our taking. Photos to be posted next weekend (hopefully).
